Paul and Storm’s Learning Town Episode 1 Review

LearningTown_1
Episode 1 of Learning Town is now available for your viewing pleasure on the Geek and Sundry YouTube channel. Last week, I had the pleasure of watching a sneak preview of the full first episode. Oh, the laughter it caused.

For those of you who are not yet familiar with this brand new web series, Learning Town is the brain child of geek music duo Paul and StormLearning Town has been promoted as 30 Rock meets Flight of the Concords. Paul and Storm play an alternative version of themselves who, through unfortunate circumstance, end up becoming the hosts of Learning Town. Learning Town will never be the same. Every single episode will feature a brand new song by Paul and Storm. It also stars  Bresha Webb and Mike Phirman. Future guest stars will include James Urbaniak (Venture Bros.), Greg Benson (youtube.com/mediocrefilms), Maurissa Tancharoen (Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog), Weird Al Yankovic, plus many more.

<spoiler alert!>

Just as they are about to make their debut appearance on the hit children’s television show called Learning Town, the host Lawrence Martin aka Learning Larry dies. <sad trombone>. Imagine if you will, that you are about to get your “big break” on Mister Rogers or Sesame Street, only to watch Fred Rogers or Big Bird die. <more sad trombone>. But, at least Paul and Storm got paid!

We learn all about this tragedy within the first minute, thanks to ace reporting by What the Buck?!

</spoiler alert!>

So, right off the bat, Paul and Storm have you laughing in an almost, “I’m going to hell for laughing at this!” sort of way. That is not the end of the laughter.

Compete with a brilliant Meatloaf parody called Do It with Paul dressed in drag — excellent production value, bent humour, and smart, satirical writing, Learning Town was a lot better than I had expected. Geek and Sundry is known for producing high quality content, including Felicia Day’s web series The Guild and her vlog called The Flog, Wil Wheaton’s Tabletop, and so much more. The production value of Learning Town is slightly above the rest. At least it is for this viewer. For a few moments, I almost forgot that I was watching a web series, and I was not ready for it to be over.

Another pleasant surprise was seeing a different kind of chemistry between Paul and Storm. I’ve seen them preform live on stage. I’ve had the pleasure of having a marathon length conversation with them for my Geeky Pleasures Radio Show. I thought I’d see more of the same interactions that I’d grown to enjoy when I’ve watched them perform. This is not your stage show Paul and Storm, or the witty banter you’d expect to hear if you’ve listened to their podcast or various interviews Paul and Storm. They are actually a slightly different, yet familiar Paul and Storm. This is a Paul and Storm who could very easily fit into a primetime television series, say like a guest appearance on The Big Bang Theory. <hopes that someone at CBS reads this and makes it so!>

I’ll also admit that I think Storm stole the show.  While both did a wonderful job, Storm is exactly where he should be.

So. Watch the show that is handy dandy-ly embedded below for your easy viewing. All too soon, the 7 minutes and 45 seconds are over, and you’ll be begging to be watching more because HOW DARE THEY END IT THERE! I WANT MORE! NOW!
