Input Needed – Possible Changes To Geeky Pleasures

As you’ve probably noticed, things at Geeky Pleasures have been extremely quiet lately.

Between planning a wedding, preparing for GottaCon 2013, releasing a book, writing for a variety of things, increasing amounts of travel, and so much more, I haven’t been able to find the time to update Geeky Pleasures on a regular schedule. I’ve had a lot of content that I could be sharing, but the current format of Geeky Pleasures isn’t quite conducive to short bursts of information.

Currently, I’m contemplating a somewhat drastic change to Geeky Pleasures, both in layout and in the type of posts that will be found here. In reality, Geeky Pleasures will almost be converting back to how it was when I launched her just over three years ago, however the layout will be quite different.

When I first launched Geeky Pleasures, it was suppose to be a place to quickly dump little bits of things that caught my eye during the day, geeky things that were causing me pleasure. This was also to be mixed with longer posts, such as reviews, and a place to put my Geeky Pleasures Radio Show interviews, as the website was an offshoot of the then one year old radio show. What first started out as a website updated a couple times a week, quickly turned into a website updated anywhere from 3 – 10 times a day, Monday through Friday. Currently, I just do not have the time for doing major updates on a daily basis, but I do have time to do a mix of press releases, reviews, interviews, and a lot of quick, “Hey, check out this thing I just saw” posts.

But is this something you all would be okay with? Would you be okay with me sharing quick little bursts of whatever; things that, lately, I’ve only had time to share on Twitter and, sometimes, my personal Google Plus accounts? While still receiving press releases, interviews, and reviews when I have the time.

What this would mean is that Geeky Pleasures would no longer be updated on a regular schedule, or with a predetermined amount of daily posts. Posts could go up at any time during the day, even on weekends if I have the time. There could also be days with no posts, and days where there are 15+ posts?

And, yes. I realize there is such thing as Tumblr, but there are a few things about Tumblr that do not work for me, so I’m considering this Tumblr like WordPress theme, with some modifications, such as having the blog page be the landing page, and not photos or a video.

I also have a question about how I go about sharing Geeky Pleasures posts. Twitter is the largest source of social media traffic to my website. As a lot of posts will be the result of things I tweet, how do you suggest I keep traffic coming into Geeky Pleasures, without getting Twitter followers angry for tweeting the same content multiple times? And what about Google Plus. I will still share every thing on Geeky Pleasures’ Google Plus page, but how much of it should I share to my personal page? Right now, I only share one Geeky Pleasures post a day on my personal page. How would you like me to share Geeky Pleasures content?

Do you have any other suggestions? Feedback?

I would really appreciate your thoughts on all of this.

I know many of you like to respond to my posts directly through Twitter and Google Plus, as it is convenient. But for the sake of keeping every one’s feedback organized, I’d appreciate it if you left comments in the comment section below. And if no-one comments, I’ll take that as a sign that you don’t really care what I do with this website and proceed accordingly.

  1. Since I follow you closely on Twitter anyway, I’m very likely to see anything you put there. I’m in my Google+ account much less often. Mostly I’m going to come here when a tweet from you points me here for a longer-form post. (It has become like that for my Tumblr blogs, too. I post long form extended interest stuff to the Tumblr occasionally and point to it from my much-more widely read Twitter stream.)

If what you have is mostly a link, set up something that will autopost it to twitter and here — and expect most of the traffic to go directly from Twitter to the link. (Don’t link back here and then out to the original unless you are adding substantially to the original as comment.) Long form original, post here and tweet a link to it.

If you can continue to use a format that puts several boxed items on the main page, keep doing so, as it lets the most recent interview stay in view while later posts are posted as well. Those boxes need to be higher on the page than your current layout allows, however. I have to go WAY down the page to see them. Ideally, the landing page should have the boxes right at eye-level as the page opens, with the newest post at top or top left.

I hope this is helpful. I’m probably not your typical reader, I realize.

  2. I’m good with whatever makes your life easier. I’d rather get shorter items than none at all.
